StaadPro-Beam (300X750) on Edge of Column (300X1500)

02/18/2008 3:13 AM

Dear Respected,

I have modeled a nine story building in StaadPro. Wherein, by architectural restrictions i need to place a beam over a column.

Beam Dimensions - 300mm X 750mm

Column Dimensions - 300mm X 1500mm in plan

Now, the problem is i should place the beam not at the center of the column but at the one edge of that column.

i.e., the remaining 1500-300 = 1200 of column width is left free.

Can anyone suggest how to model this ?

Or Can anyone suggest where i can get a solution ?

The eccentricity is 600 mm, so create a fictitious member with a 600 cantilever from the column at each floor level and support the 300 wide beam on the end of the cantilever. Give the cantilever an infinite stiffness.

Whole Hearted Thanks.

But should i create a new beam like member from the column node ? Then how should the slab ( plates ) be placed ?

Can it be done with offset command ?

I would like to give my copy of staadfoundation software to you if you help me. Shall i send you the staad model ?

Staadfoundation software works unbelievable. StaadPro output is the input for staadfoundation. ( time saving).

There would be two nodes in your model at each level, one at the center of the column, the other at the center of your beam (600 mm away). The fictional beam with infinite rigidity cantilevers from one node to the other and carries the eccentric beam. The plates are attached all around the column and to the edge of the eccentric beam. It doesn't matter whether they are attached to the virtual beam or not since it lies totally within the perimeter of the column. It is simply a device to permit your analysis to account for eccentricity.

I am not familiar with StaadPro so I can't tell you whether or not it can be done with the "Offset" command. Perhaps it can, in which case you do not need to establish the second node or the fictional beam.

I do not have StaadPro and you cannot legally give me a copy of your software, so you cannot send me the Staad model.

I am pleased that your software works so well. Perhaps you could share your Staad experience with vitin. See this site. Possibly you could help each other. Two heads are better than one, though not on the same body.

whole hearted thanks once again.

shall i send you both StaadPro and StaadFoundation softwares.

We are a group of persons here, seeking for help.

If you have not expertised to give a solution in Staad modelling, Would you suggest anyother means, where i will get a right-cut methodology.

As I have indicated to you before, you cannot legally send me StaadPro or StaadFoundation software. If you did and I were to accept it, we could both be prosecuted for piracy.

I have tried a number of finite element programs, but not this one. Accordingly, I am not qualified to tutor anyone on the specifics of this software. You must realize that, for any piece of software, there is a learning curve. You and your colleagues must be prepared to invest a considerable amount of time with the program in order to develop some skill with it.

There are many sites on the internet offering tutorials. If you google "StaadPro" you should come up with this site from which you can find numerous possibilities. You might find something in your local bookstore or library as well.

Hiee...

There is absolutely no harm in flushing the beam to an edge of the column & leaving the (1500 - 300) mm = 1200 mm free. But the universally accepted orientation of the column is to place the beam on top of the 300 mm edge of the column i.e the column dimension being 1500 X 300 mm.

Moreover i cannot underdtand that how can eccentricity of 600mm come in to play in this case. May be I will undersdtand well if you give the detail of the total structure.

Regards

Sam

hello

I jst wanted to know the reason for infinite stiffness.........coz in general the fictitious or rigid beam is used as a beam with depth equals the floor to floor height......
