Online Degrees-Are they worth it?

02/21/2008 11:20 AM

Hello All:

I am currently working as a mechanical engineer with about 5 years under my belt. I will be returing to school to earn a master's degree in electrical engineering. I also want to learn computer science and master a couple of programming languages. It will take a couple of years to earn the master's degree and even longer to earn another degree in computer science (or software engineering). I thought it might be possible to go the a conventional university for electrical engineering while simultaneouly earning a computer science degree online.

Can anyone recommend a good online program that is respected? Is there such a thing? Any recommendations? My ultimate goal is to work with robotics and other mechtronic systems. Any advice?

Hello Heath

If you advise your location, it should be easier to assist you.

You can enter location into your "My Profile".

Go to lower right-hand corner of monitor screen, in the "Logged In" box, click on "Edit Profile", which will then auto-enter for each Post at CR4.

kind Regards....

That will depend on whether you need the degree to 'get in the door' or you will be using the knowledge you gain on the job to further your career. If you need the degree to 'get in the door', I would recommend against doing it on-line.

I guess you must be very bright and industrious or not be married or have a personal life. What you are proposing would be daunting to most individuals. It was all I could do to just get my graduate level EE work done in a masters program and I didn't have to work at the same time as I had a fully funded scholarship along with my salary. But I was married with two active kids under the age of four.

Good luck with your quest.

Nowadays an online degree is just as good as a any other degree with exceptions.

Get your degree from a Currently accredited school that has in person classes in addition to on line degrees. Do not get a "technical degree" from DeVry or ITT as they are not accredited and won't count for dookey.

They are many colleges on line that offer masters and computer programming classes on line.

Remember when you get your degree it will not say "On Line MAster's Degree" It will just say a Master's Degree.

Check out the www.universityalliance.com this is a group of Colleges that offer on line degrees.

Good Luck

I see from your link that offers "Master Certificate in Six Sigma". Is that really a degree? I don't think so. I didn't see EE or any other engineering listed anywhere.
