Testing for Adsorption Capacity of Zeolites

02/25/2008 5:21 PM

I am wanting to test the adsorption capacity of a specially formulated zeolite in a desiccator using various types of salt solutions (i.e. Lithium Chloride, Potassium Acetate, & Magnesium Chloride). I am wanting to test for adsorption at low humity levels.

If someone could provide me with a step by step procedure on how to do this and where to purchase the salt solutions, it would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

You will find all you need to know in a set of books by the name of Aquametry, published by Wiley Interscience. If your local library doesn't have it, most university libraries do. Essentially you create saturated salt solution chambers that provide constant controlled humidity. You then expose samples of dried zeolite to the controlled humidity. The adsorbed water is normally measured as weight gain. The most commonly used instrument is the thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA).

Shadrach,

For additional information regarding Zeolites, refer to work which originated from the State University of New York, Professors Mumpten and Pond. Also, data produced by the International Council on Zeolites...(with diverse info. as to characteristics of many types of zeolite).

I work with only one type of zeolite, Clinoptilolite. My knowledge is limited, so I refer to Mumpten, Pond, and their colleagues.

Best wishes in your progress. jw
