How to control process heating of diamond cutting through laser?

Due to heat and refreaction of beam some times diamond got breakage internally. We are applying coating of zinc base paste, whitner etc.. But we need enough good solution for it.

We are using ND:Yag laser of Q switchhed output power between 5 watt to 24 watts. Beam dia. Apxx. 1.2 mm. Energy 3 mJ.

I'm am not quite sure what your question actually is.

Your thermal shock would be an issue. And avoiding it would be hard due to the varience of the refractorblity of the diamond. And would be hard to pin down the amount of heat that is absorbed or refracted.

what I feel is there must be some issues with laser beam profile

Have you ever checked your beam profile may be there are some hot spots or beam is not stable enough or may be beam is breathing shrinking and increasing and this may caused sudden increase in energy density.

One more reason can be that power from laser is not stable all the time and changing the profile too . Both addsup to more energy density than required.

You should monitor your laser continiously for both beam profile as well as power say for 3 Hrs or so.

Hi,

I assume you did not get the adequate laser control to do this job.

Who made your laser and which type is it.

Do you have a control of pulse to pulse repeatability: energy, pulse duration, pulse shape, TEM mode-structure.

You do not need any absorber on the diamond to be cut.

If the pulse is adjusted to do some minor graphitizing with the first pulse then the absorption will be high enough to vaporize it at the next pulse and convert some more diamond to graphite.

But be aware that there is only a very small window of process parameters working in this way. Too low energy will do nothing. (Fluctuating mode structure and pulse length will act so.) Too high energy will crack your diamond.

I know that this is no easy task.

Try hard.

All that seems a little high powered for a diamond, especially if you're trying to get rid of a carbon particle. Try reducing your power!

Also, remember - don't fill your drilling hole. If you do, the Gem People will refuse to grade your diamonds!!!

Also, you may want to try moving to a CO2 laser.
