High referactive index fluid

02/25/2008 10:56 AM

I'm looking for fluid with high refractive index (>1.8) at vsible wavelengths. Who can tell me which supplier can deliver it?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Guest,

only Carbon disulfide is listed with RI of 1.628. It is quite low for my application.

How ever many thanks.

Hi danglie,

That's a pretty high RI. I did some searching and found this:

http://www.2spi.com/catalog/ltmic/cargille-liquid.html

Apparently, they do have some in that range. Looks like the Gem Refractometer Liquid might do it for you. Call Cargille.

Best Regards,

Mike

Hi Mikey,

Thank you for this info. I know already Cargille. They have different kinds of fluid with RI untill 2.31. Most of these products are toxic and warm to use. Therefore they are not allowed to be used in Lab.

Hi Danglie,

everybody in mineralogical work is using these fluids, you need only some µg per test, so the toxicity is existing but not really important.

Proper training and handling should be done.

Any screwdriver is more dangerous. And the many products of your company produce a lot of dangerous dust and do this very efficiently. So wear a dust mask and proceed with your work.

With the fluids you are not recommended to swallow these or put drops on your skin or blow the residuals to the atmosphere.

And tell your CEO that your safety regulations prevent you from useful and efficient work.

Optical oil for high magnification microscopes will hit that range or nearly so. Spendy though.

Many thanks for the great help.
