In water treatment equipment for ships and oil platforms, the lower the pressure, the lower the temperature, and the lower the tendency for the di- and tri-valent materials to form precipitates. Also, lower operating temperatures results in lower specific energy costs.

In pharmaceutical manufacture, the lower the pressure, the easier it is to pull volatiles off the reactor using a vacuum pump. Higher pressures mean higher temperatures, which introduce more flammability risks.
