steam

I would like to be able to calculate the amount of dry steam I would need to produce to power a 2 stroke single cylinder 500cc at different rpm's up to a max of 10000 rpm, is there an equation or formula I could use? also, if possible temperature and pressure of the dry steam needed

So you're trying to make a steam engine?

usually you push the piston each direction, for a single cylinder, every revolution will take 1000cc's of steam.

you will need to know the size of the piston, to calculate the pressure requirements & output torque.

Converting a multi cylinder, would be an easier task.

Is this a steam engine, and you just want to know amount steam needed, or is it a 2-stroke IC engine you hope to run using steam? Ref to 2 stroke single cylinder 500cc sounds like the latter, but you can't do that, leastways not without some mods, as the valve gear is very different.

Steam engines are always 2 stroke and as Garthh says, usually double-acting, in which case 1000cc of steam per rev at actual steam conditions, assuming the inlet valve is open throughout the stroke. If you know the P & T of the steam, you can work out the mass flow. But the P & T required depend on the power you want from the engine.

Check with Lynx steam engine about conversion details. Yes, it will take some modifications, especially if you want some efficiency. E-mail beesidemeusa@yahoo.co.uk and ask about steam. Has done some research on the Net.
