Traction System

02/29/2008 6:31 AM

why we are not facing electric shock while we are travelling in a electric train, b'coz the overhead conductor line is there which is connected to the collector, and the train is made of conducting material ?

The electricity from the pantograph to the driving motor is isolated properly therefore the chances of an eclectic shock is small. (unless something goes wrong passengers are only exposed to one terminal.

Recently a youth playing on the roof of the unit was shocked because he touched the pantograph wile standing on the aluminium roof with bare feet or conductive shoes.

The batteries under the seats are charged from generators under the coaches and a electric shock is possible if the isolation is damaged

As an interesting aside:

@ one point in our (USA) history, we used to employ boys to re-align the pantograph/conductor arrangement, using dry, wooden sticks. They'd ride around on top of the coaches!

The train structure is earthed via the wheels and the rails. The overhead current is insulated from the vehicle structure until it has passed through transformers and used for traction.
