Record Gas Production in New York State

02/29/2008 2:19 PM

It is sad to know that propane and natural gas is costing more while production in my home state has set a new record for production. The DEC has posted in 2006 under Oil Gas and Mineral Resources that natural gas production had set a new record. The Trenton-Black River deposits have been hydrothermally altered creating gas reservoirs that have just been found recently over the past decade. Permits allowing wells to be drilled have just been signed and exercised over the past two years. Although I brag to my coworker that a gas furnace is significantly cheaper than burning oil I now step back and question why I pay as much as I do.

That is sad,

I am not going into explaining my views on the economics of it, but at least your comments can be used as fodder for the conspiracy theorist.

Here is a link to the DEC report:

http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/materials_minerals_pdf/06anrpt1.pdf

as cited from page 11

New York's reported natural gas production for

2006 was a new State record of 55.342 bcf

There are also several published journal articles discussing the dolomitization of Limestones due to hydrothermal alteration and degassing of the Mg rich waters. It is to my best guess that many of these deposits as close as Jamaica, NY have yet to be drilled.

Thank you very much.. we enjoy having you fine folks as customers...

Thanks to the GOD for (1st) the availability of propane and natural gas, and thanks to GOD for (2nd) the achievement of a new record for their production. For higher costing, I think it is a small problem that can be managed.

I think your title has the clue to the costs: "in New York State." I've never met a NY politician who missed an opportunity to tax something, so I would imagine that the costs of drilling the new wells were assessed a nice fat tax on top of the development costs.

I don't know if that rates as a "conspiracy theory" or not, but there you are.
