Seeking contract services for Ac to Dc Power Supply

02/29/2008 4:05 PM

I am requesting a possibility of securing your expertise on designing an electrical/electronic system for us.

My company produces mobile medical units stocked with supplies and taken to remote areas in order to service medical needs in third world countries. So far we have only supplied these units in areas supported by 110-AC 60hz. However we are fabricating a unit that will be sent to Kenya, Africa in the next 60 days.

Our need is this.

Kenya uses 240 AC at 50hz and our units are outfitted with standard American 110 AC fixtures which is not compatible with Kenya power. We normally install a generator in the 6KW to 8KW range in order to provide unit power and additional accessory power for the units medical staff. I would like to explore designing a system that would use a DC battery bank with enough power to invert to 110 AC and run our fixtures at a load of approximately 4,000 watts comprised of a 13,500 roof mount heat pump (1,600 watts peak load), and lighting (800 watts peak load). The exterior of the unit will use 12V low voltage during transport and possible when stationary. DC low voltage could also run much more but we can discuss this at a later time. We will also need to invert power to 240 AC 50hz for local devices such as an exam table and other misc. power…I really cannot tell you what the locals are going load this with but it should be limited. I would like to set up a DC generator to charge the batteries on voltage demand using a diesel genset and have a transfer switch set up to override the genset when and if the users plug into grid power.

If any of this makes any sense or not please contact me.

The genset you normally use should convert to 240 50Hz and it should have a DC out also.

You are biting off quite a mouthful, but I am not even sure you need all, or should reasonably supply all in such a remote area. It is one thing to produce 220 Volts 50 or 60 Hertz. Most modern equipment, medical included better work on both frequencies. So, if you decide to run the van on 110Volts and to provide 220Volts for the local equipment, the size the transformer you are willing to install will set the max power they get from you. These transformer provide sinusoid power, liked by most equipment. Or you get a generator with 110 and 220 output. They are quite common on building jobsites. DC / AC converters generally provide a square wave, and many devices do not handle that well. So far so good.

Heat pump, what for?!? It really may not be a priority for the locals. It is a goldmine asking them, what they think it is important. Believe me, they will tell you.

800 Watts for light (in an operating room?!?) may be an overkill for local sensibilities too. Please do not misunderstand me: The furthest from me is the thought to criticise you, and just waste your time. Much better is to adjust a design, while there is time, and to adjust to local requirements.

Feel to send me an email, just click on my name, if you think I can be of further help.

Hi M68,

Your comments and questions fall in line with ours as we also are supporting and enterprise in Zambia which uses the same type power service where available.

Due some statements you've made we can deduce your efforts will be accomplished 'off-grid'??

A solar array with battery bank is an effect solution considering Kenya's average of sun lit days.

However do consider the statements of 'leveles' and evaluate the necessity. Remember the application of our power thirsty devices in a powerless environment may a conundrum produce.

By comparison we are using an off-grid approach to effect independence. We are employing 'lead acid' battery banks in an 120V DC system for critical lighting using Leds; very efficient, general lighting uses LV. The type air conditioning we take for granted is unknown and/or unnecessary locally. You will be $$ ahead to employ roof mount gravity fed water tanks with solar collector systems to heat for showers etc.. We use a gen-set to supply power to a well pump and for emergency back-up but diesel is $6 USD per liter.

Suggest you thoroughly research 'off-grid power systems' and configure to your specific needs.

If the national standard is 220V at 50 Hz then generate that. For specific pieces of equipment that normally use 110V have you considered using a switching power supply which could cover a range of 85-240V and 50-60Hz. That way you only have to deal with one voltage and frequency.

Kenya uses the same system as the UK: 240 V 50Hz as you have already noted. They also use the same mains plugs and sockets. Electrical and department stores there also sell mains filters to protect white goods from mains spikes.
