Four years ago an Edmonton lady and her son heard a loud noise in the middle of the night. She thought there had been an earthquake but none of her neighbors had felt anything.
The portion of roof with a vaulted ceiling was framed with scissor trusses spanning 32 feet, similar to the truss shown in the sketch above. A structural engineer determined that the trusses had failed at the peak of the roof because the truss plates did not lap sufficiently with the central vertical member. It simply pulled away from the top chord. Partitions prevented the roof from falling to the floor, but some trusses are beyond the partitions, so roof deck may be carrying the loads by plate action.
When I visited the house last week, the lady advised that she had been talking to several contractors trying to get a quotation to repair the roof. None of them wanted to touch it. They apparently believed that the problem originated from foundation settlement.
I went down to the basement and did not see any obvious signs of foundation settlement. But one thing was puzzling. In an unfinished section of basement, there was a gap of about 10 mm between the basement wall and edge of grade slab. I was able to put my fingers down this gap and feel the sand below the slab. The wall must have bulged out and away from the slab.
The only explanation I can think of is that the increase in air pressure from the small but sudden downward movement of the roof was enough to move the foundation wall outward 10 mm.
Has anyone run into a similar situation? Are there any other theories as to what caused the gap?
