New Welding Process Needed

03/05/2008 10:18 PM

Hai Everybody currently i am using arc welding process to join Fe 410 material.. I like to know which process will be best used instead of this arc welding..i will not compromise on cost and quality.. so suggest me some process to carry out my welding process..

GTAW or TIG welding (sometimes referred to as heliarc) is always the most superior welding process, also the most expensive because the time it takes. Pulsed MIG would be my second choice.

arc welding is a general terms to describe a lot of different process... SMAW, GTAW, MIG, MAG...what kind of process are you using? if you don't want an arc process then you need a laser, friction ....

Hi chennai Anand,

As far as I know, Fe 410 is a structural plain carbon steel, equivalent to ASTM A36 or EN S255.

As other colleagues have said before, arc welding includes several methods. I don't know which is the one you are use at present. Being such type of material, I suppose you may be using SMAW (manual shielded metal arc welding with covered electrodes).

If this is the case and you want to improve the process, you can use semiautomatic/ automatic welding using GMAW with CO2 and bare or flux cored wire which are the most common in that type of application. It's not common to use TIG or MIG welding for such steel.

If the plates or sheets you are welding have a very low thickness and the component is not a heavy loaded structure (for example if it's sheet welding for domestic appliances) and you don't need a highly resistant weld you can use resistance weld (spot or seam).

Please give us some more information if you want a more explicit answer.

Cheers

Why use welding when there are alternate methods which are clean, fast and silent and which do not emit any dangerous electro-magnetic radiation known to severely increase the risk for cancer in certain organs?

Take a look at clinching. For details see www.attexorinc.com

Of course, clinching may be an option, but it's necessary to know the exact application because clinching cannot replace all welding processes. I asked, as all other colleagues for more details.

I think you don't read completely my post and as soon as you saw the word "welding" answered immediately. One of the welding processes I've mentioned (resistance welding) do not emit any "dangerous electro-magnetic radiation known to severely increase the risk for cancer in certain organs". There are some others (friction, inertial or continuous for example).

Anyway I've never heard about initiatives to forbid "arc welding processes" due to their cancer risk.

The principal source of "dangerous electromagnetic radiation" in this planet comes from the sun and space. Are you trying to claim against the sun too?

Do you know that any people which flight frequently (included flight crews) receive a radiation dose much higher than ordinary people?

Cheers

I'm not trying to avoid answering your question, but before you receive a specific answer, you need to ask a specific question. At a minimum, we need to know the joint configuration and configuration options. It would also help to understand why you are looking to replace your present process - what your requirements are.

Can you please specify your base material in accordance with ASTM or ASME specifications. Also, specify the configuration of base metal, is it pipe, tube, sheet, or structural steel... etc.) and its thickness.

Dear Abdel,

If you read my first post, I mentioned that Fe 410 is a structural plain carbon steel according to Indian Standards and equivalent to ASTM A36.

Almost we all have asked about more details as product form, thickness, use, type of penetration needed (full or partial), etc. Even asked about the present welding process he's using. Some of us have supposed he is using SMAW and therefore proposed other which can improve the production rates. But a precise answer needs a precise question...

Cheers

Dear Kwetz

For structural steel plates or sections ASTM-A36 and/or ASTM-A283 Grade C, I prefer manual shielded metal arc welding SMAW, with filler metal E6013. Or we can select another automatic/semiautomatic arc welding SAW, which characterized by its high deposition rates.

Hi,

When you say arc welding , we assume it to be SMAW Process. But remember all the processes falls under arc welding and you got to be specific. Also You have to mentioned the thickness of the metal under use. Even assuming it as a sheet metal of thickness less than 3.20 mm, you can use GMAW or FCAW process if you can manage. But these processes can be adopted using fixtures and for higher volumes and productivity.

If it not feasible, then GTAW will be ideal for thin sheets. For materials beyond 4.00 mm and above, GMAW/ FCAW are good. Both are efficient, quality oriented and cost effective compared to SMAW process.

Publish a drawing showing cross section of what you are Arc Welding. And how.

Only then you can expect some advice for betterment.
