Connecting Cell Phone to External Source

03/06/2008 10:06 PM

Thanks to those who have responded to my question dated 4-3-08. The mobile phone I am using is Nokia - 1110i. Still I am not clear hot to power the phone through external DC source but without the battery in place. Expecting help from learned people.

Basically, you need a Dummy Battery!

And if you're concerned about the 3rd terminal on your battery pack then you'd better speak to somebody who has acces to a circuit diagram or knows what to do!

The manufacturer wouldn't help because what you're trying to do is not in their book from their point of view in anyway.

The 3rd contact is either a charge or charge sensor but it could also be anything, so be careful and keep the supply voltage in its range when you run the phone!

It is also advisable to operate it through a 1Amp fuse, it depends how much juice your mobile draws.

It can be done but, do not blame us if it blows up! After all you need some skills to do this!

P.S. In my previous comment I mentioned a black & white wire - I meant the white one to be a RED one instead! So, it is a pair of Black (-) & Red (+) wires, OK?

If you have a faulty battery-pack carefully open up its housing (without braking it) and remove its battery content but save the terminals leading to the outside and then:

  • Get a pair of wires (black & white)!
  • Connect them to the terminals of the housing (blk (-) & red (+)!
  • Bring the wires out from the housing on the most convenient spot through a gromet/sleeve!
  • Glue the housing back together (with a few drops here & there)!
  • Hook the external wire ends to a connector of your choice!

and bob's your uncle.

If you cannot do this you'd better give it to somebody who can do this for you.

I think (as he has mentioned) his problem is how to use the 3rd contact correctly....

I would suggest using a mechanical timer on the bomb.

I love it! That was also my thought.....

Of course, this kind of thing doesn't help anyone trying to make a bomb, since it is merely the use of a non-standard battery, etc. The instructions to open up a dead battery and use it as a sort of "connector", are probably best. The third wire in battery packs is usually a temperature sensor, since LiIon batteries tend to catch fire if not charged properly, such as when the charging circuit fails somehow, or, someone tries to solder them up and use them in a non-standard configuration, just like this one... so the temperature is usually closely monitored so charge current can be reduced or terminated if the temperature is too high. Temp is the number one problem with all rechargables, but LiIon is especially sensitive to it.

Oh yeah, one other thing: if the battery is disassembled, if there are LiIon cells in it, they are quite dangerous and toxic. I am an experienced, knowledgable, trained, certified, (in other words, a rocket scientist, more or less), engineer, and I wouldn't fool around with LiIon batteries, unless the reason was awfully compelling. My best advice is: don't mess with these batteries. There are enough problems with lithium as it is, without folks tearing into battery packs for their cell phones, and other gizmos. I can't think of any circumstance worth the risk of exposing oneself to toxic lithium, or, to possible fire and even minor explosion. Lithium burns hot when it gets around moisture, and as may be guessed, a lithium battery does have some lithium in it!

If you just plug in the charger you will be running off an external power source. This is not good continuously, especially for a new battery as it will get too hot; so check if the old faulty battery is getting hot in case it goes pop, in which case refer to #5 bobguz.

Of course it will no longer be a 'mobile' 'phone unless you have a very long extension lead.

Just damn curious,

Why do you want to operate the cell phone without the battery?

Don't forget that the battery is not only a source, it is a stabilized source. Without it your phone may very well go crazy. unless you have a well regulated and filtered power supply. What's the deal???

Wangito.

Here are three sources that will help you understand the three terminal problem and other essential facts about your project.

The third terminal is for measuring battery temperature with the circuit thermistor connection.
