Surge Transfer

03/08/2008 3:01 PM

We are going to install 30 MW Gas Turbine Generator to the Network Grid, and the power utility has asked us to submit a complete power study before the work. I have been doing it before, except for one item, they asked for evaluation of Surge Transfer from network to the generator output system. Could somebody please kindly explain to me, what is this all about, and which link that i could use for the reference for the calculation?

Thank you very much.

Regards,

Adhyartha

Evaluation of Surge transfer is the study of the behavior of your interconnecting transformer during fast transients in the system like lightning for example.

Please try this link:

Glad to be of help

Thanks for the reply Southerncomfort,

Another questions, if I may ask:

  • Is it only the Lightning strike that should be considered as a fast transient? I don't have to consider other transient, such as loss of load or generation? If it is so, then I must consider several cases, such as Lightning strike between generator and transformer and also Lightning strikes after the transformer, and then calculate the transfer surge between HV winding to LV winding.
  • Does the intention of such study is to select a surge arrester?

Thank you

Yep, you are in the right direction!

Basically, you also have to evaluate/ gather data whether your installation location is exposed to lightning and switching activities. Also remember that if your installation is at the end of a long line, your system can be subjected to wave reflections and may present sparkover levels above operating voltage crest (overvoltages).

Please refer to IEEE 62.41 for more info.

adhyartha; i feel what they are asking is if the load is dumped that is if the circuit breaker opens off the system, what do you do to keep the turbine from over speeding? and blowing up the generator , you need to transfer the output of generator to a dummy load bank

Thanks for the comment, Perry

For the Gas Turbine, would it be enough if I provide quick acting valves for emergency shut down to isolate the gasification and gas cleaning system from the turbine to prevent the overspeeding?

Regards.
