that would depend on some things,

such as what type of process do you need it for.

pellets for injection/or extrusion, sheets, round bar

what type of plastic.

PET, UHMW......

Not knowing where you are from, if from the US, global spec, or the yellow pages,

the distributor would of the certs that you would require. (have to request them, but I suggest you get assitance from thier application engineers.

Google plastics most the manufactures will list what plastics meet USDA requirements for food contact. I do know that a lot of the plastic cutting boards the white ones are made of some form of polyethylene. Most HDPE

How about Tescos? "Cling-film" fits the bill.

Are you under the impression that all it takes is an FDA grade material? I think it takes much more than that to be FDA approved. We have occasionally done a "food" prototype here at my prototyping workplace, using FDA grade polyurethane and FDA grade mold releases in a FDA grade silicone rubber. Even then, the end result isn't FDA approved. As I understand it, your particular manufacturing process has to be FDA approved...

I don't know the whole story, but you will want to consult with someone to make sure you're doing it right, or you may be liable down the road.

It comes down to what the item is going to be used for.

What are you manufacturing, a bearing, seal, component? What are the rough dimensions? What is the use temperature of the application? Are there any chemical concerns, like sterilization chemicals (usually chlorine based). Is the part submerged? Does it require a minimum strength? There are many materials available for food contact, and we supply several. However, the end use determines the material chosen.

There are also injection moldable materials that meet the requirement. You mentioned a "limited run" so do you have a tool?

Please let us know more details.

Where are you located?

What type of material? I can give you several suppliers in Canada for Polyethylene.

We use a variety of PTFE (Teflon) coated fabrics to manufacture products that are fabricated into a variety of food related products. Most of the products we work with are PTFE coated fiberglass fabrics. The products include baking sheets, used in an oven at temperatures up to 600 F., and industrial conveyor belts that are used to cook food that is placed directly on the belt. Products include, pork, chicken and beef products, tortillas, pizza crust, eggs, etc.

The individual products don't get approved by the FDA. Standard practice is for the fabricator (maker of the end product) to buy the coated fabric from the manufacturer with a certification that the product is certified for direct food contact. This obliges the manufacturer to use only FDA (sometimes USDA) approved ingredients to make the product.

We also make and market a variety of Silicone rubber coated fabrics. Similar rules apply
