how can i design an in-car density sensor

03/11/2008 5:59 PM

hello,i am nas, i am a first degree graduating class student of electrical engineering and i am going to do my final year project on designing a system to sense the number of people in a moving car to be used as a controller by a traffic police which aimed at minimizing the acciedents that may occour because of this over capacity passanger carring .i read about the pyroelectric sensors and all the related topics and i want you to advice me what special sensors and devices i have to use. thanks for all your cooperation .

Sorry, can't assist with any project that intends to give Big Brother even more control of our lives - even in the name of protecting us from ourselves. You're on your own as far as I'm concerned...

I doubt that statistically you can attribute overloading as a meaningful cause of accidents. It almost always boils down to driver error.

A load cell in each seat.

Count the butts!?

Seriously, from an engineering perspective, how do you tell the difference between 2 skinny people and 1 fat person? At 6' tall and 158 lbs, I've been told it would take 2 of me to make a shadow; how do you tell 2 of me from 1 Oprah Winfrey?

Hi KW0,

Ohhh that Oprah remark was baaaaaaad! But I like it.

I got to thinking after I made the post, that they may want to be able to sense the number of people in the car externally, without getting any information from the vehicle itself. If so, my idea wouldn't work anyway.

The load cells would read either zero (± some small number) or ~30+ pounds.

Q: how do you tell 2 of me from 1 Oprah Winfrey? - A: You both weigh more than 30 lb.

Unless you had something very heavy in the seat, that would = 1 person. In the case of back seat with capacity for 3 adults or 4 kids, some sort of statistical algorithm could be used.

Mike

While I have to agree with the sentiment expressed by the first guest response, this is to good a puzzle to pass up.

If each model of vehicle has a specified weight limit and a given spring rate in the suspension, a simple laser distance measuring device could be mounted on the chassis to detect distance to roadway. When the vehicle is overloaded and the distance to roadway becomes to small, the ignition circuit is locked out. A simple timer/buffer could smooth out rough road oscillations and generate a mean roadway clearance value.

What about fitting the traffic Police with a Mk.1 eyeball sensor and a brain?
