Meteor May Have Caused Early Mass Extinction

Scientists have found an impact crater more than a mile under the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. The meteor that created the 300 mile wide crater 250 million years ago may have caused the Permian-Triassic mass extinction and perhaps set into motion the breakup of the supercontinent Gondwanda.

Earth peppered by meteors

Taking a cue from our Moon's many big craters, Earth must also have been hit by many giant boulders in the distant past. Fortunately, every one that has hit is one less to worry about for the future! But there are hundreds of thousands left out there...
