Rule of Thumb to Select Gas Compressor

03/12/2008 5:42 AM

Hello,

Can anyone tell me what is the general rule of thumb to select either reciprocating or centrifugal type gas compressor? What will govern the decision mainly; the pressure ratio or mass/volume flow?

I have these conditions; volume flow = 20MMSCFD, suction P = 100psig, discharge P = 400psig, suction T = 104 F, gas is 16 MW, What will be the suitable compressor? I believe this is borderline case?

I think that flow rate and ratio puts you in a centrifugal for a single machine train. The pressures are no problem for either a centrifugal or a recip, but that is a pretty high flow rate for a recip at that ratio (assuming one machine, if you used multiple recips you could do it.. it would just come down to space and economics).

Thank you Steve.

As a general rule, what is the flow threshold to decide centrifugal versus recip machine, if there is any? Thanks.

We have a set of envelopes in our selection standard, I just checked your conditions against that.

If you go to the web site of an OEM like Dresser Rand or Mann turbo that makes both, they may have a set of envelopes as well. I a pretty sure I have seen a set of curves on the Mann web site any way.

Here is an example of the sort of info you can find on the OEM web sites..
