What Engine?

03/12/2008 6:19 AM

I'm trying to settle an argument a discussion! Ford US produced, from 1991, the Explorer SUV, with an option for a 4.0 litre Cologne based V6 engine. Is this the same engine fitted to the UK model, imported from 1995. (I think it is, and have a small wager on the outcome!) The naysayers insist that the 4.0 litre block was never used in an Eu application. I'm sure there will be someone out there who can put this to rest.

The Cologne engine could be German. Ford's 351 cu. in. V8's came in two flavors, the Cleveland and the Windsor. The Windsor was a small block from Canada, just across the border from Detroit. The Cleveland was a big block. If Ford has an operation in Germany or a partner there, that could explain the name. You might want to check with the parts department of the nearest dealership.

The Cologne engine is in fact from, Cologne! And Ford has a rather large operation in Germany. (Ford has a rather larger selection of engines than, say, Mitsubishi....)

For further info, check out this!

The local dealer is very ambiguous about it..

Here is an interesting fact. Ford's first OHV V8 ( the 239 Y block ) had two bolts holding the valve cover on. The later Y block converted to Four bolts. The next engine from Ford was their FE motor. Five bolts. Next was the Windsor. Yes. Six bolts. Next out was the "385" with seven bolts. And finishing up with the Cleavland. and it had eight bolts. And I thought there was no logic to Ford.

The Cologne V6 as used in the Capri, Granada, Escort, Scimitar & others in the UK was a 3 litre engine but Wiki suggests that the 4 litre is a development of the same engine.

Wrongo! The 2 litre V4 and 3 litre V6 are the Essex, the Cologne started as 1.8 and went up eventually to 2.0, 2.3, 2.4, 2.6, 2.8, 2.9.(In the EU) Only the 2.8 was fitted to the Capri, at least in the UK.

you do realize my first response was highly tongue-in-cheek, right?

here in the states, the ranger mini truck and the mazda b2300 are in fact the same vehicle. assembled here in the us from worldwide parts suppliers.

the only difference between the 1996 ranger and the b2300 is the logo on the front and rear.

the engine is a copy of the nissan nap-z from the mid 80's built by mitsubishi.

everything under the hood of my wife's b2300 is labeled ford, and yet the local ford dealer says they don't have the code reader that will work on it......explaint that one!

Badge engineering! Over hear you can buy a Ford Galaxy, Made in the Seat factory in Spain. The car is the same as the Seat Alhambra, bar the badges, and, also the VW Sharan. All 3 the same car.

That situation was also true in the 90's in the USA with Chrysler and Mitsubishi. The Mitsubishi Eclipse and Eagle Talon...same car. At one point I had a 'Dodge' D50 mini-truck. All the labels, etc. were from Mitsubishi, with the exception of Dodge on the front and rear of the vehicle. Anytime that I had to buy parts for the vehicle, I couldn't walk into an auto-parts store and get parts for a Dodge D-50, instead I had to buy parts for the Mitsubishi counterpart. I'm sure that must have confused some people. The Dodge Avenger is also a Mitsubishi product.

Ah. The Plymouth Arrow. One of Chrysler's early joint projects with Mitsubishi. You got to meet a lot of nice people with an Arrow. Tow truck drivers, service writers, mechanics... It was the first I had heard of a counter rotating balancing shaft so the engine wouldn't shake itself to pieces, at least for the first 10,000 miles. Didn't matter though. The rest of the car would rust into the ground sooner than that.

When I have had similar questions about weather a pair of engines were related I found that a TRW engine parts manual was an excelling tool. Compare the parts required for each of the engines, if there are parts used on both engines you will collect. Be careful of minor parts like valve springs, valve locks etc. Stick with engine bearings, head gaskets, connecting rods and pistons. Good luck.

Thanks for that, I've recently looked on a UK forum site for Explorer owners, and my wager has been won!
