Metal Cutting machine

03/12/2008 11:22 PM

What is the best machine for cutting metal sheet (around 2 mm to 2.5 mm thickness) to create shape like flowers or any drawing (to be small in size and able to accommodate 1mx1m sheet size)?

You may use Plasma, laser or Waterjet. In That order

Why not use a punch and die in a flypress?

John.

To answer you question properly we would have to know to what amount of use it would get. Large volume production to home hobbyist.

Plasma cutter would do the job for serious hobbyist. Cutting torch is small in size. For the thickness you wish to cut the power pack would be portable.

A powered nibbler or even a HD jig saw for small jobs. Both are hand held power tools. Which are portable

If I was running production there are computer aided cutting tables that use plasma , water jets or lasers. These are large and not portable.

I'd go waterjet if you have a friendly local guy. Find out what file types his machine accepts and take it from there. Waterjet isn't the cheapest, but for short run stuff, you aren't going to get the benefits from the throughput of laser. Also waterjet cuts a wider range of materials so deal with a more diverse customer base and are probably friendlier to newcomers. Certainly Jetline in Middlesborough England have been a godsend to me. They are cutting 4mm Nylon 66, 4mm, 6mm and 25mm HDPE and 20mm closed cell foam for me, and the next batch of 3 and 6mm stainless steel will probably go through them and possibly my 3mm Aluminium chariot subfloor assembly as well.

To be honest the operator is what matters but I feel waterjet gets the right type of operator for small run guys. If you are talking millions tell a few people and let them start making offers.

Simon
