Around the World in 65 Days

06/07/2006 11:24 AM

Earthrace, the "world's coolest boat," according to New Zealand developers, hopes to cut 10 days off the current world record for circumnavigating the globe. Moreover, the team plans to beat the 75-day record using only renewable fuel. Earthrace runs on biodiesel and boasts of other environmentally-friendly technologies. In addition to the 24,000 nautical mile race, Earthrace will visit 60 of the world's cities in an effort to raise awareness about the sustainable use of resources. Follow its progress around the world.

Around the world in 65 days

To put this into context, the current world record of a little under 75 days was set by Ellen MacArthur who SAILED SINGLE-HANDED AND NON-STOP around the world a little less than 2 years ago. That's the ultimate in renewable power. Also, the Vendee Globe, held every couple of years, is a non-stop, single-handed, around-the-world race in which the world's top sailors go head-to-head against each other. The winner usually completes the race in not much more than the current world record. Even if you're not a sailor, it's worth following this race to see the drama involved - it's scheduled to start late November from the north-western coast of France.
