Diesel Engine Intake Air Temperature.

03/14/2008 5:03 AM

my question is what is the ideal temperature for the air charged in a cylinder of a Diesel engine?

from a self-ignition point of view, COOL air have a high self iginition temperature while HOT air have a lower one.

from a density point of view, COOL air have a high density while HOT air have a lower one.

This sounds like a trick question (the fuel isn't injected until after the air is compressed (near the end of compression stroke), at that time, it should be at a maximum which is much hotter than the flashpoint of the fuel.

Maybe I'm just mistunderstanding the question, Sorry if this isn't too helpful, been a long time since thermodynamics.

well yea you are 100% right, the intake air will be hot after the compression stroke and before the injection, but my question is at the suction stroke, what should be the air temperature of the intaked air? is it better to be hot or cool?

cooler is better, if you need an ideal number for calculations use the ambient air temp. But if you're using an engine with EGR, naturally it will be hotter.

To lower the temp the more molecules per liter of air= more expansion upon combustion=more power
