Breaking down epoxies

03/14/2008 10:17 AM

Does anyone know of any product that can breakdown hardened epoxy coatings? Any natural products that can be used in a factory setting where production is still happening? Thanks!!

Acetone usually does a good job. We use it to dissolve all kinds of epoxies.

there are specialized epoxy strippers that work by swelling the epoxy and the weakened eopxy can be easily removed.

Methylene chloride can also work, but it swells many things and can be a health risk of not handled properly

also look here

I was going to recommend Acetone also... but the only thing that kept coming up in my head was tri-nitro-toluene. It might work too, but it uses a different technique.

I think it's safe to say it would break the epoxy down...

Way back in the 1970s I was given the advice that toluene and acetone will remove epoxy. the Toluene softens it and the acetone breaks it up.
