Passive Bluetooth?

03/15/2008 2:34 PM

Does anyone have any knowledge on the possibility of passive bluetooth? The idea is much like what is used in some applications of RFID. A bluetooth enabled tag (tank circuit like) which would acquire power from the transmitted source and reflect back. The data transferred would not need to be extensive, just a few bytes.

The reason I ask; RFID in even simple applications is still hindered greatly by distance and RF disturbances (metal, etc.). It seems to me that bluetooth would be more stable due to it's lower frequency, but obviously more costly unless the tags could be passive. I suspect that even a 10 foot clear transmission would have excellent applications. Especially in security, location identification, etc.

Has anyone had any experience in this area? Perhaps someone could point me in a good direction. Thank you in advance.

It seems that you are actually looking for a parasite bluetooth. That is it should get its power via the bluetooth signal.

Energy transmission is possible but the range would still be small and the efficiency low.

For what I have in mind, even 5 feet would be worth a consideration. Where can I look for some answers or hints?

hello kaganh,

I think RFID technology is more better than bluetooth;because RFID uses tags which are having unique id . rfid works on one either frequency(125 khz or other)also bluetooth requires more complex devices than rfid.

RFID isn't built into today's cellphones. I landed here because I too want a technology that allows a user to wave their phone in front of something and get back an active link to a website. To my knowledge, no such thing exists. Because of the ubiquity of bluetooth, I believe that's the right technology to enable this.

Checkout NFC (Near Field Communication). It's the technology used in new blink credit cards. It is going to be on more and more phones, first one I know of is the NexusS. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near_field_communication
