Yaw angle of a 14,5mm bullet....

03/17/2008 11:29 AM

Hello :)

Does anyone know at what distance the yaw angle of a 14,5mm bullet becomes less that 5 degrees? And if so, are there tables or formulas for this?

Lars

Hey, maybe if we spin the sucker it won't wobble so much?

I've only one thing to say to that - 'gyroscopic induced rifling'

Mind you if it was round like a musket ball, it wouldn't have any yaw or wobble would it?

It works with the flights on an arrow too.

Not many people realise the flights must all be from the same type of wing... e.g you can't mix left wing and right wing feathers 'cos the curve is different, and it won't spin....

I should have waited 'til April the first then everyone would think I was joking!

I saw you post that reply before and wasn't to sure if you were joking.... especially as some arrows I've seen including darts have plastic flights so they don't induce a spin?

It does make some sense though to rotate the arrow in flight...

John.

Plastic fletchings should be fixed at a slight angle to induce spin.
Mind, even with no spin they do improve stability.

Shot gun slugs travel in a spiral 2" to 2-1/5" radius?

I'm no shotgun user, but I think in some countries you can buy 12 bore cartridges which have a solid 1 ounce lump of lead to fire.

I did a job for Chubb Security 12 years ago to test their security shutters against attack and the BS at the time required the use of a shotgun solid cartridge as well as AK47 and handguns etc...

All had to be fired 5 times in a certain pattern and depending what slug managed to get through that was the rating given to the effectiveness of the steel shutter!!

Good fun!! - John.

Ohhh yes those duck guns they were huge in length...

Anybody know why a shotgun is 'measured' in 12 bore or 4 bore??

I know a 410 is the calibre of the cartridge 0.410" diameter I think...

Yes..its the number of lead balls which just fit down the bore which would weigh 1Lb.

Do I get a sardine?

So a 4 bore must have a tiny barrel?? I thought they were quite big?

Do pay attention and stop tumbling in your Panda cage... else no bamboo shoots for you!

4 bore... 4 balls weigh a pound ..so each ball is 1/4 lb... e.g. BIG

12 bore...12 balls to the pound...so each ball weighs 1/12 lb e.g not so big

and, let's not forget the shape of the bullet, FMJ (Full Metal Jacket), JHP (Jacket Hollow Point), WadCutter, the list goes on and on, all are factors.

Re: Yaw angle of a 14,5mm bullet....

Almost every bullet is designed to remain true in flight. Riffling of the barrel imparts a spin on the bullet as it transverses the barrel for stability and minimum air drag en flight. The yaw angle is always less than 5° from the moment you put the round in the breach.

If it didn't, the accuracy and travel distance would be severely degraded.

Some rounds are designed to tumble, but only after impact so that it maximizes damage to organs and blood vessels.

I believe more damage is done due to the shock wave. But a tumbling round would diffently make a bigger nastier hole.

"But a tumbling round would diffently make a bigger nastier hole."

It does. That, in fact, is what's responsible for the notorious stopping power of the NATO 5.56mm round.

Ok, so less THAN 5 degrees :)

The reason i ask is that according to the AEP 55 (a ballistic test standard for vehicles) the yaw angle must be lower than 5 degrees for it to be a valid test hit.

So i thought this might be a problem during short range shooting, because the time it takes for the bullet to stabilize it self in flight?

I didn't think the archer's paradox applied to bullets .

(An arrow wobbles in flight as it flexes around the bow ... it then oscillates for the first few yards of flight..maybe as much as 10yards. and will have reduced hitting power until stabilised)

Wow! thanks for that link 'guest' ....

My dad used to be in the REME during WWII and he often spoke about how projectiles spin out of the barrel and the need for a safety fuse for the first time of flight because they were unstable for the first portion of flight...

That link has shown me what on earth he meant!!
