Servo Motor Survey Trends

06/12/2006 11:02 AM

Trends in servo motor technology development and deployment are gauged in a recent Control Engineering survey in which 90% of 134 respondents cited a preference for brushless type servos. A shift to more compact designs, increased replacement of stepper systems, and higher performance feedback devices is driven by pricing considerations as well as performance requirements for higher speed and acceleration ratings. Follow the link to learn about industry preferences for software-based control and modes of servo networking.

Networked

07/05/2006 3:08 PM

"This latest survey shows 51% of respondents networking their servo motors, compared to 29% and 36% in the 2004 and 2003 surveys." That's quite a jump in a relatively short period of time. DeviceNet may be the most popular protocol today, but my money is on Ethernet for the long-term. Integration with front-office systems is key.
