Energy Consevation Through VFDs in AC Motors

06/13/2006 8:00 AM

Please explain how VFDs can be useful for energy conservation also suggest the theory behind vector control of indution motors in depth, if possible send the links which discuss the same in depth.

The attached site has some basic information regarding all types of motors and some information on VFDs. http://www.electricmotors.machinedesign.com/guiEdi ts/Content/bdeee11/bdeee11

VFD energy conservation

06/14/2006 8:23 AM

My understanding is that the VFD in and of itself does not conserve energy, but does impart a small inefficiency on the electrical side. However, the VFD does offer an opportunity to more precisely match motor speed and power to the work requirement. For a pump or fan application, a minor reduction in drive speed can have a large impact on total energy consumption over running at constant speed.
