How many already and how many more? The great Hubble at it again.

03/20/2008 3:00 PM

Does anybody know how many of these discoveries have been made on the back of a Hubble image or reading?

I am absolutely gob-smacked by the intense rate these discoveries seem to come in lately and more than not, Hubble seems to have at least contributed, if not done all of the reading or imaging, to the data needed to come up with the science behind it.

Now we have several targets identified as "hot" for life so the S.E.T.I. can do it's best or worse in a narrow field and exhaust the frequencies.

Are there any statistics available about which discoveries Hubble was involved in and maybe some comparison tables between other space instruments or telescopes?

I don't know of a specific site for the telescope but there is a site that monitors science and technology on an up to the minute basis. I check it every day.

www.PhysOrg.com

What's gob-smacked?

I will check that out, thanks.

Gob-smacked is an English "ekspreshiun" for being totally surprised by something. As if something hits you over the head and you did not see it coming. Normally you use this phrase if the thing that surprised you is near unbelievable so it can be good as well as bad. I.e. Hubbles discoveries gob-smacked me again <GOOD>, or:

This government's total lack of insight gob-smacks me again <BAD>

Hope I have explained it clearly, English is my second language you know

Hi Case,

The reason your post caught my attention was "GOB-SMACKED"! Never heard that one before.

Now I'll sit back and listen to others.

Regards,

-John

Wait until we get a 50- or a 100-meter diameter mirror on the Moon, and then see what discoveries we have. We'd need to glue a lot of small mirror segments together, possibly in a "building" where we'd have an atmosphere and controlled temperature. We wouldn't need adaptive optics as there's no atmosphere on the Moon! I think I saw a magazine (from Astronomy magazine ?) of photos from Hubble.

So far the talks are only of a radio telescope on the far side of the moon but I may be wrong.

It would also be very beneficial to have an optical telescope there of course but don't hold your breath. The money for the research in viability is about 2.5 million dollars and that has been approved but the money needed to actually do it is an other matter.

Hi case491,

I saw a show this evening (History channel?) about the possibility of placing telescopes on the moon to look for near-earth asteroids and lasers to shoot at them and alter their paths.

If it gets done I hope that the very best instruments are used and the telescopes won't be relegated to just that one purpose. Not that it's not a Good purpose but it would seem like such a waste to not take an unfettered peak at the rest of the cosmos.

I am also "gob-smacked" (I love that term) at the discoveries of late. Can't learn enough about everything around us! I've caught the "gotta-know" bug and I need to scratch it as much as possible.

Jeff

The "bug" actually bit me a long time ago in the 7th grade when I realized that the happiest part of my school day was walking into my science classes. Thankfully the bug has stayed with me and has just spread over the years to create an insatiable "itch" to learn all I can about as much as possible.

Now at age 52, I can't wait to receive the CR4 thread update in the email. I get giddy like a small child opening christmas gifts. I guess I'm hooked on this site (as well as others) because I get to do alot of "scratching" here.

I even like the off-topic posts (most of the time). Feels more like a family here.
