about capacitor start/run motor

Can someone confirm if it is safe and ok to use a 1 hp 220V single phase capacitor start capacitor run motor in a vertical position. Will the centrifugal switch operate effectively?

Somebody may have seen it but I personally have never run into a motor that couldn't be oriented however you wanted. I have many single phase motors in this plant mounted verticle... Not an issue unless the manufacturer's literature specifically denotes that as a no-no.

Generally the concern is bearing type and that's unlikely to be an issue in a 1 hp motor. Even if you reduced the life by 30%, the cost would be low.

Should be fine. They are mounted that way all the time in drill presses, outside airconditioning units,etc.

Best advice I have would be to contact the manufacturer. We can't even begin to guess without manufacturer and model number. The manufacturer should KNOW!!

Centrifugal switches do not rely upon gravity to operate. Spring forces to close and rotational (centrifugal) forces to open.

Your concern should be focused on bearings and how they are loaded in the application. If the axial load is significant, bearing life will be compromised.

Hi Alex: More important than the centrifugal switch, with respect to mounting horizontal or vertical, is the type of bushings/bearings the rotor is mounted with. The usual bearing/or bushing for a verticl mounted motor will have shoulder/step on the side of bushing/bearing to stop any possibility of the rotor wearing into the feild coils. I have installed the occasional motor in a verticle position. If the bearing/bushing did not have the step shoulder, I removed the end housing and installed a hard fiber washer on the shaft, very close fit inside dia. to the shaft, and about 1/8" thick. This stops the Rotor from wearing of any winding insolation, and burning up a very good motor. Carl p.s. this was a common mistake on choice of motors installed in some of the earlier Upright Carpet Caccums.No Company will admit theirs was one of them.
