Powering Laptop Using Only AC suppy.

03/23/2008 8:35 AM

I got this laptop that have serve me for about 3 years and the battery is really beaten up. Could I run my laptop without the battery on but having the AC power supply powering it? I mean I detach the battery from the laptop and then plug the laptop unit directly to the AC power suppy. Could it work?

Should be fine unless it has some stupid circuitry which won't let it run without the battery.

Just try it... if it works it's fine.

Oh I was hoping for complete dissection...

I think I think you gave info about re-attaching a cable to laptop MB?

All will be fine, you won't lose data, it will operate just as a desktop does, no problem. The use of the battery is for one purpose only, portability.

Oh yes, no problem....and in case you are worried about loosing data if power fails then you may use UPS.

Cheers.

Most laptop batteries have inbuilt 'intelligent' charging circuits, this circuit provides information to the operating system on the battery status...

If you remove the battery the status will not be available for the laptop to decide about power saving and displaying the battery status...

So my guess is that it wouldn't work with out the battery in place - but hey! why not leave the battery in? its flat but the laptop will only nag you about it?

Every laptop I've tried it with has worked without the battery in place at all. It's only been maybe 6 of them over the past couple of years though. Windows just recognizes it as being on an AC supply and adjusts accordingly. There are separate settings for "on battery" and "plugged in".

One probably issue though is that if your motherboard battery is dead as well (they usually last about the same amount of time), then your CMOS will dump every time you turn it off, meaning that it will fault on power-up and need to be reset every time just to turn on. Not a big deal, but it's a pain in the rear after the 3rd time. (trust me, I know)

It will work fine, in fact I only put my battery in my laptop when I need it for portability....it stops the batteries dying from continuous overcharging!!! Which you appear to have already done of course!!!

If you want the battery to last either turn off the mains once the battery is full and only turn it back on when the battery is almost empty, or remove the battery completely when it is not needed like I do.....

Leaving the battery in and plugged into the mains will always kill it relatively quickly. 3 years is a good life for a battery under such conditions, one year is normal.....but do they tell you that? Of course not!!

I have 3 of my laptops of varying age,(others have been sold or given away...) the newest is a little over a year old, the oldest that I still use (for a PCB CAD program from the 286 CPU days!) must be 10 years old at least (486 CPU, Win3.1, a new unused battery is still around somewhere....!), all except one are still using the original batteries!!!
