"Smart" Barrels to Make Chemical Storage Safer

06/15/2006 2:45 PM

Next generation RFID labels, attached to chemical drums, promise better compliance with safety regulations when storing hazardous materials. Smart active labels could warn if the barrels are leaking of if warehouse capacity has been exceeded, for example. Embedded sensing, computing, and wireless communication capabilities give the labels real-time functionality. British Petroleum, which plans to test the system in the UK later this year, envisions commercial possibilities three to five years ahead. Follow the link for more about the technology and its potential applications.

Oak Casks

06/15/2006 4:51 PM

I wonder if the technology could be used with the oak casks in which whiskey is aged. Although the distillers mix different barrels together to yield a more consistent product, there is a great degree of variability due to differences in temperature, etc.
