Chain Saw Regulation

03/25/2008 8:19 AM

HI all

WE need to use chain saw in our company but i was advised that the saws should be serviced / overhauled by a qualified mechanic before we use them......

is there any body have any idea is that true and where we can check about that

I tried OSHA 29 CFR 1910.266 but it was not helpful

thank you for your time

What is senior management's policy on the subject? What happens if someone sharpening it from the 'we' gets it seriously wrong?

There are liability aspects to consider, as chainsaws are potentially lethal devices. If the 'we' buys-in the service from someone else who is appropriately qualified, then a measure of indemnity and protection is provided to the 'we', as there will be records of the transaction.

So it depends upon the nature and strength of the health and safety recommendations in the locality of the 'we' and the structure in which the 'we' operates.

Good points, best to just buy new blades, they cost about $20. I never sharpen them anymore, very time consuming. Nothing is more important than a sharp blade. Dull blades don't cut, and can kick back, and remove your face.

Probably a better idea is to hire professionals, let them do your chainsaw work for you. Using a chainsaw is fun, for about the first 5 minutes. Then, it's just really hard work. Better yet, let the senior manager give it a try. See how long it takes to hire someone then.

If it starts, you're fine. The most important thing is to keep the blade sharp, and make sure you have the proper gas/2 cycle oil mixture. Bad things happen with a dull blade. Wear safety glasses, gloves, heavy clothing. I use one all the time, and haven't cut a limb off, yet.

Operating a chainsaw in the USA you don't need protective gloves or sleeves...as you have the right to 'bare arms' (baaad joke ...sorry)

Del, Del, Del, you have reached a new low. I expect more out of silly guys than that. I think you should come to my house and slice up several cords of oak, with you bare arms. Bring Vermin with you, he can stack it. I'll provide the beer.

The employees "trained" to operate them should go through a check list daily before they even attempt to use them. If something is not right right (chain brake does not operate, protective device loose or missing, gas leak, etc.) should be removed from service, tagged to describe problem, and fixed by a qualified technician or reputable service center. Sharp chains, correct gas/oil mixture should be part responsibility of the user but can be controlled by a responsible person in the facility to make sure enough of each is on hand for necessary replacement or consumption. Operators know best when something is not right because they use these devices daily. Untrained people should not be allowed to use something as capable of injuring themselves or others. They are responsible for the safe operation of the tool. You are responsible for providing a safe and reliable tool for their use as well as proper training.

If it's under Warranty, let the supplier demonstrate it before accepting it for use.

Let the 'we' check with its insurance company that its employees are covered for using it. Take the advice of the insurance assessor, for indemnity reasons.

Yellow pages under saw sharping. Local Stihl dealer.

All so as that you are asking these questions you or the others of your company have limited use of this tool. Seek professional training as well these tools are very dangerous.
