Global Warming

03/27/2008 3:47 AM

It strikes me from time to time that the human element is of a pretty arrogant type. How is it that we think that global warming is 100% of a human effort? The earth throughout it's history has gone through warming and cooling cycles. I do not dispute, as an engineer, that we need to use our brains to improve our technology to the point and benifit of all human kind and, at times certain sections of the race need to be blackmailed for their own good. But this constant arrogant trash which I suspect is being used by politics and business to further their own, short term, interests will eventually produce a backlash which will be of no use to anyone or at the least an attitude of indifference which will produce a cynical backlash. Can ayone run out the actual authoritive figures for this thing or not?

Apparently not. All that can be done is establish a 90% level of confidence, according to recent scientific reports.

I found a lot of good information here:

http://www.climate-skeptic.com/

I'm sick of the hypocrisy of guys like Al Gore, with his 60 room estate, (one of), and private jet. He uses more energy in one hour than I use in a whole year. It's a lefty thing, do as I say, not as I do.

Look, don't get me wrong, I'm all for new technology, we really should be looking for ways to replace our dependence on fossil fuels, from other sometimes unstable countries.

And I'm not saying that we haven't effected the world in some way, but it's not all our fault, this is just what the world does from time to time. I don't think, no matter how many trillions of dollars, of my money, they want to through at this, is going to make any difference at all.

I really doubt it. Nobody knows why the sudden and very deep drop in global temperature has occurred over the last year.

That tells me that we just don't know and anyone that claims that they do is highly suspect in my mind.

Yes, the subject is political and is pathological science at this point.

This is about the only board I visit where people have a sane philosophy on this stuff.

Thank God I am not alone!

One of my college profs said engineers should run the planet (politically) not lawyers. I didn't know, at the time, how right he was.

Engineers do rule mate! Were just far to subversive to be caught doing it. When was anything useful ever invented or came into being at the hands of a lawyer or politician?

I don't think it is so much arrogance as ignorance. We don't understand why our world is warming so quickly because we have not seen it happen in our lifetime. The problem with that viewpoint is that our lifetime is not a significant time span in comparison with the millions of years the world has been in existence.

It is true that the world is warming. Nobody can deny it. It is probably going to continue to get warmer. We are still in the process of transitioning from an ice age to a warmer period. It will take thousands of years to happen, so don't expect to see it in your lifetime. Eventually, a new ice age will occur just as it has several times in the past.

Mankind is responsible for substantial pollution in this world and should make serious attempts at cleaning up the mess. Conservation of fossil fuels would be a wise move. Preservation of fresh water is going to be paramount in future years. We cannot afford to use drinking water to flush out the last bit of oil and gas from the ground, only to lose it from the water cycle for ever. Big business is going to have to change its ways or our grandchildren will be in for some rough times.

We have to stop hunting tigers and polar bears for their skins and elephants for their tusks. We have to stop burning down our rain forests. We have all kinds of ways to improve.

We have to stop plundering the whale population. We have to stop arbitrarily killing unpalatable fish and other forms of ocean life for the sake of a few halibut on our plates. In short, we have to smarten up. Will we do it? Probably not any time soon. But we should!

ba/el, you state wrming is undeniable, yep even the ulra-liberal NPR is having their doubts: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=88520025 and there are other readins indicating the wrming trend has ended http://www.dailytech.com/Temperature+Monitors+Report+Worldwide+Global+Cooling/article10866.htm.

To me, this indicates that we really o not have enough solid info to claim anything is fact right now, and i also believe we are not looking at enough proper data.
