LED replacement for florescent T8 60W

03/27/2008 9:25 AM

We are looking for LED replacement bulbs for florescent T8 60W. I have heard of the availability of such with greatly extended life. I also understand that removal of ballast is necessary and costs are considerably higher per unit, but given lower electrical usage and far less labor input the operational costs create a very profitable payback. I have not been able to locate a supplier (other than mfgs. in China, whose minimum shipments are far greater than our needs) with the 60W, I found T8 15W, but not what I need. Any source info would greatly appreciated.

I recently read about such replacements in the JayCar catalogue. They are a hobbiest supplier in Australia, look them up on the net

We can supply you with this product, as we have over 100 factories that we work with.

you said:

Even if you buy in the USA, I assure you no-one is making these now, except in China.

That many LED's in a tube pcb are not cheap, and the labor is also a big factor.

I can get you a sample order of anything you want.

Hi Don

Rather than take up your time with a call I figured I'd post & we'd all learn. About how much less power does the LED tube use over the Florescent and how's the quality of the light? I only ask because I've been getting grief from the miniflorescent conversions from incandescent bulbs I've tried out.

thanks

To further explain my project: We have about 1200 florescent brackets each with 4 T8 60W W bulbs. We would invest in the LED replacements if they offer a lifespan that will give us a 2-3 year payback. Operation times: 50% of the brackets are 24/7, the rest are 16/7. 1200x4 = 4800, plus additional 200 on hand = 5,000 bulbs. Please reply with TOTAL costs, including required "drivers." I understand that I need to remove ballast, install the "driver" then install the LED bulb. Are there disposal requirements for the ballasts and the bulbs? By disposal, I mean is there any toxic waste issue that needs to be figured into the total changeout cost?

There is no disposal requirements for LED side. this is typical Green product. If you are looking at high end then you may go to dopant which contains elements which is WEES and RoHS compliance requiremnt materials but that is less than 0.1 percent of of what normal will be and is of LED chip only

LED chip life will be more than 20+ years as long as there is good thermal management in place and temperature does not exceed more than 40C. This is doable and you can get lot of thermal managed substrate on which you can put light engine and attach light engine to the tube fixture.

Blaster is replaced with LED driver and si done. You can have any color case you like to have LED tube light in existing fixture.

To figure out the waste disposal cost it will depend on chip coating and from whome you buy LED chip. Solar power system has more lead. Your window glass has more arsenic thant the LED chip but as honest guy like you most of the material for LED chip is based on dopped galmium arsenide or dopped silicon carbide and material as controlled substance under RoHS and WEEES are there and you have to take care of that or get assumption but the amount is not even 10% of what solar guys have in the front silver paste. front silver paste is made of silver and leaded glass mix. As current norms if lead content is less than 0.5wt % you do not have to report here the content over all all is in part per million level abut for moral guy you need to factor in disposal.

You will have more mercury in the tube than the galium and arsenic in LED chip. That is only parts needs disposal rest is normal materials.

this is cleaner system provides 90+ percent conversion of energy and less heat generation so you do not have to run air conditioner to remove heat gereated by bulb

You do need to remove booster and in same area put driver and you are set to go. The things change

Booster to driver same number

Tube to LEDS

Cover stays

You can make any power bulb you want the technology is simple only issue with LED is the life of the bulb if not assembled correctly the life is too short and will not depend on LED bulb made in China to provide long life. They will provoide the wat you need but not the life.

You can buy light engine and you can assemble light engine on metal plate in shape you like and buy a driver and run that. As long as temperature of bulb does not go above 40C the life will be more than 20 years. If you can make inside cavity then you can have different color plastic to have different light color out of same LED.

Light engin you can buy from hoby shop in small quantity. You need wire and scree drive.

Best light engine is made by CREE and you can get in hobby shop also. Aluminum block of 0.25 inch square with two holes you can get drilled or dril your self attach plastic casing and connect light engine to driver which also available in hobby shope and you have the LED bulb. More light engine you put brighter it gets and you have control.

If you need you can read my paper and if need to have sample of bulb in shape you like I can make one for you free so you can see how easy it is.

Mass production will need equipment and investment but for hobby and lighting in and out side of house you do not need China.

Thanks for the info. If I understand correctly, I remove the ballast, install a "driver." What is the driver's specific function? Do I need one for each 48 inch bulb? The brackets requires 4 bulbs each. If life is a problem for Chinese made, where do I aquire long life bulbs to meet the payback for the investment?

It is easy to make and custamize your need. All components are availbale in market and if you are interested I can guide you thrugh with the manufacturing issues and quaity product manufacturing with risk minimization withdevelopment of hot spot and degradation of LED.

We are only interested in purchasing the bulbs ready for installation. The issue that has arisen is Underwriter's Lab approval. This approval is required for all LED replacements of T8 florescent bulbs. Without this approval, there is not a single insurance company in the United States of America that will issue an insurance policy for property loss or liability in the case of any injury which can be traced back to any component of electrical systems for any lighting except incandesent. When the mfgs get this done, we are in business, but not until then.
