WINDOWS XP OUTLOOK EXPRESS

04/01/2008 11:58 AM

Hi Guys,

XP is a pain in the butt.

It wants to compress my emails and asks me every time I exit OUTLOOK EXPRESS.

But I have lots of room and I don't wanna let it do it. Period.

I'm just hoping there is a way to turn OFF this automatic message,

If one of you guys know where to turn it OFF,

I'd be a "Happy Camper" if he'd let me in on "Microsofts TOP SECRET"

I'm sure, you can tell I really "love BILL GATES products".

all the best

Jens

Here's how to turn XP into the most wonderful OS you can imagine: upgrade to VISTA.

Hi TVP,

Thanks for your advice, but I'm not quite ready to dish out the cash, not just yet.

So I guess I'll just have to put up with it.

I have always waited about 2 years before I upgrade.

I don't like being a guinea pig, especially when I have to dish out cash to be one.

I like to wait until "most" of the bugs are ironed out.

My personal recommendation is to wait for the following OS after Vista and then wait AT LEAST another 2 years. Leave Vista completely alone......

XP is actually quite stable now with all the updates, several Test magazines here in Germany are of the opinion that XP will become the "New" Win98 and have a very long life indeed, they are prophesying till 2014 at least......

I am sure that once MS stops selling XP completely (as they would like to do right now!!), the price of unused copies of XP will leap up in price.....!!!

I didn't jump to Vista but got it with a new machine and don't understand the flap about it. I won't run audio or media on it but otherwise is great improvement over XP and have no problem running older programs???

Then you are simply one of the lucky ones!

Be grateful that you are one of the few who do not need video or audio, but that alone makes you a "rare bird" in this world as most people want both and more......they are the ones really suffering from Vista.....I would guess at more than 90% of the owners of Vista are in the firing line for problems. ATI graphics drivers account for a great many failures alone says MS!!!

I have read, just yesterday, about some hair raising problems with the SP1 update of Vista, locking out people from their PCs, or rebooting all the time, or simply dead......MS is desperately trying to fix the problems, which appears at least to be a problem of compatibility of the update to Vista itself!!!!! How typical MS and BG........

Due to Vista problems, I have been purchasing any Laptops I needed for the last year or so (since Vista suddenly appeared on all new hardware, whenever that was!) without any OS on them (brings the price well down AND ALSO BRINGS A GOOD MANY SUPPORT CDS THAT YOU WOULD NOT NORMALLY GET!) and I still have a small stock of WinXP SP1 Professional CDs, all legally bought on ebay at really low prices. I have the later updates all on CD so that is not a problem either......

I have always built my PCs from scratch with top grade sorted components, naturally no OS was included, as it was just another component I purchased!!

Yeah I guess so.. and I got the vista machine for a specific role... as edu basic for a student and all is well.

Though I do appreciate good media and dabble in a little recording now and then using XP of course.

Yes I agree, I tried to update using the Vista SP1 but have failed 3x so we're done with it.

I think you can turn this option off by going into Outlook Express, then Tool, then Option and uncheck the option for compress your file when exit. Hope this help.

Hi Mr. MIdnite,

No XP does not have an uncheck box for that purpose.

At least I could not find it.

Maybe Vista has.

Outlook Express 6 does not appear to have the option to turn off deleted message compression.

How about instead using Outlook for email? Outlook stores messages differently and does not require compression for file maintenance.

It also has many more features, and uses MS Word for composing with its superior spell checking.

Hi Delmar,

I tried outlook once (back in win98), didn't like it.

Guess I'll just have to put up with this nuisance.

Thanks for your help.

After I look around the properties of Outlook Express, there is a box you can check to compress the conent to save space. This is the way:

Right click on the Icon for Outlook Express (I assume you have it on your desktop, if not, click Start, then right click on Outlook Express), and select properties, then under General Tab, by the Attributes, click the Advanced button. From there, uncheck the compress contents to save space box, and then click Apply to apply the changes, and you should be good to go.

I've used outlook express for years and not had the experience you describe. I don't store anything there though that could explain. And there is a check box to enable the compression feature.

Vista is the cure though; just though you needed hear that again Vista is the cure (:

That is odd, I use Outlook Express all the time, and it only ask me once in a while if I want to compress my mail when I exit, not every time I exit. Now I'm curious.

Same for me. I don't know what the trigger is: time or disk space taken, but it only pops up once in a while. MidniteFighter's recommendation looks the best. I'll have to check it out tonight when I get home. We use Outlook at work, but I use Outlook Express at home.

What version of OE are you using?

click on tools , then options, then other and then autoarchive.

Uncheck the tab that says 'Run auto archive every'

That should fix it.

Hi guys,

This is the version of outlook express that I have :

6.00.2900.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)

It came with my XP professional and I do upgrade it when it ask me to do an upgrade, so I should have the latest version.

I have none of the "buttons" that you guys have pointed me to. You must have different versions.

I thank you all for the time in trying to help me, but I think

I'll just have to put up with it, unless one of you happens to have the same version that I have ; AND he has managed to find the "secret" button hidded somewhere in the GUI.

Programmers have a weard understanding of the ordinary brain I mean(none egghead). OOOPS I used to teach assembly language at the college.

Hi Jen,

That's the version I use (at least that's what Outlook Express show when I click on the Help), anyway, see my pervious post for the instruction.

By the way, I too have XP Professional as my OS, so the instruction should work for you, too. Good Luck

Hi again Midnite,

I can't find the button, that you're pointing at. the only place I have an

"advanced button" is in the "shortcut" tab but it's got nothing to do with this subject whatsoever. It's used for setting up new credentials.

When I rightclick the mouse button and get to the properties/general tab there is no advanced button near the attribute checkbox.

Something must have gone haywire in the OS or outlook express.

I'm just sick and tired of mr. Gates

Thanks for your trying to help me.

That's why I like this globalspec site for us "eggheads"

Just about everyone likes to help out.

Maybe if I do a fresh install it might be OK, but that's a LOOOTT of work.

Switch over to Microsoft outlook instead of Outlook Express. I have used both with XP but this problem never happened. You might have given some instruction somewhere. Please uncheck that instruction.

Hi Jens: I got a little annoyed with this same Message, until a friend told me about using an Exterior Hard Drive( mine is 80Gig) to store E-mail Messages in. I have a folder for each person on my address list, when I open & read each new message, I drag it to the Folder with the Senders Initials in my Portable Hard Drive, Then I delete the message from My Windows Inbox. (I haven't seen that message since.) Another couple of advantages; My Main Hard drive isn't slowing down anymore, and if I want to Go somewhere, I unplug My Portable HD., take it with me, to any public library, or Motel that lets me Plug it in to there in room Computer, I've got all my Messages/Address Book, with me. Carl.

Re: WINDOWS XP OUTLOOK EXPRESS

I looked all over Outlook Express last night and couldn't find any way to turn this on or off. I'm running XP Professional and the same version of OE as you.

The only thing I can think of that might affect this is whether or not you automatically empty your deleted items when closing OE. That setting is under Tools > Options. I say this based on the recommendation from Guest to use an external hard drive for e-mail storage. Of course, there are other reasons that the external hard drive might be the best solution -- such as the ability to take it with you and have access to your e-mail storage from other computers.

Be thankful you don't have Vista, you just might want to through the baby "computer" out with the wash, as it continually frustrates you, wasting your time, hiding files where it thinks they shoud be, duplicating files, and etc.

Jens,

You'll need to make a change in the Windows Registry, basically this feature is based on a time schedule of times the app is closed and the only way to change it is to reset the counter.

Rather than re-inventing the wheel see the below thread for instructions.

http://www.ureader.com/message/629131.aspx

Hope this helps!
