Bluetooth and Landline

04/03/2008 7:48 AM

Everybody has a bluetooth growing out or their ear these days.. Except at home..

I have been searching for quite awhile for a "black box" to provide Bluetooth capabilities and connectivity for my home ( land line ) phone. No real success to report.

Is a bluetooth adapter for a traditional land line just not-doable? Seems to me there are converters for nearly everything else. I just want to have the same hands-free capability at home using the Bluetooth headset of my choice as is built in to most mobile phones since I use my home phone much more than my mobile. ( And I live close to the beach where I seldom get greater than a single bar on the signal strength icon. )

I may be looking at in all the wrong places but, I'd appreciate getting pointed down the path to an adapter that allows my Bluetooth headset to pair with my home phone signal.

Thanks in advance,

Sayjak

I have something like that now. It's call T-Mobile HotSpot. At home, I've set up a wireless router, looks just like any other router, that connects to my computer. They call it HotSpot @ Home. Normally I get 1 bar at my house, but this thing is Wi FI and I get full bars within about 100m of my house. When away, it works like any other cell phone. However, it can detect other hot spots, like in a restaurant or something and automatically hook up to that. My daughter hooked me up with this system and I love it. I can go down cellar, and out in the yard, and get perfect reception. Actually, because of this, I done away with my land line altogether!

Interesting, I have been considering a repeater or amplifier because of our bad cell reception. Was looking at something this AM that runs about $450 but, maybe I'm living in the past, hanging onto land-line technology. I do a "bundle" with my cable provider so, probably can't justify the cost by what cancelling the LL would save me but I wouldn't have to walk around the house holding a "big rock" to my ear.

Thanks for the info!

That is a good deal. The only drawback is that it requires a Hotspot phone, but that may be no big deal for most. The phone is dual band and has the capability to talk over WiFi (using VoIP) or over the T-Mobile GSM network.

Look for other carriers to be bringing out their own version of this soon. It may be a product similar to a T-Mobile Hotspot@Home or a femto cell where the device generates a cell signal like a cell tower and uses your broadband for back haul to the carrier's network. Either way, you get vastly improved coverage in areas where it is not practical or feasible for the carrier to build out their coverage footprint. The carriers will offer an incentive of some sort -- like unlimited calls over the device for a small fee.

Look at the VTech LS5145 or the AT&T EPS 5632. These are phones that will link to up to 2 Bluetooth cell phones AND to a Bluetooth headset. The AT&T model will pair to up to 8 Bluetooth devices. I might get one myself.

Hi, tomcollen!

And a raise of my tom collins' glass to you and your answer. Welcome to the world of CR4. You already probably know what a great place this is for engineers to share info across disciplines. Looking forward to seeing lots of you in here.

A sincere welcome aboard!

Mark

(PS I'm off to the store to check out one of your two suggestions.)

Hi, Sayjak!

Great idea, and welcome to CR4! Hope you enjoy it here. I'm looking forward to the responses, and will be buying one as soon as I see something reliable. I tried hanging my cordless telepnone receiver near my ear with a headband. Disaster.
