04/03/2008 8:54 AM

I am looking for information and resources on 'T' and 'Y' style fence post used on farms and ranches. The information should include inventor or first use, styles, types, pictures and just about anything you can think of.

You might contact; http://www.ameristarfence.com/

They claim to be the largest manufacturer of fencing and they may be able point you in the correct direction.

On a side note; a "U" shaped post was used before the "T".

You don't say where you are located, snodster, but if you can find an old copy of the making shaping and treating of steel, published originally by USSteel ( the older the better, anything pre 1984 will do) it should have a section on rolling of t shapes.

I can check my collection(in bookcases at work) in the morning.

I am sending to you two scans from making shaping of steel which describe rolling of fence posts./

In the days of bessemers, there was an abundance of bessemer rail steel. Reil slitting mills were developed to utilize this abundant feedstock.figure 29-11 shows a typical layout for such a mill

the second scan will show youthe rolling sequence of the fence post material it is the third sequence from the right in figure 29-21.

I'm sorry that I seem to lack the ability to attache .pdf's . They are just the default standard for 99% of the world, but somehow they are deemed contraband by the server here.

The How Stuff is made show on TV showed a bit on this subject. The commentator stated that most of these type posts are Mfg.ed
from salvaged worn out rail road rail. These steel rails are soft enough to be heated, drawn and formed into extended lengths and are cut to size.
