VBA programming behind AutoCAD 2007

04/03/2008 5:24 PM

I'm looking for a good start to introducing and advacing my abilities to program in VBA behind AutoCAD 2007. I am familiar with using VBA behind Microsoft products, but am realizing that many of these mundane tasks in CAD could easily be done for me.

Do not know if this is a statement, but the first step is you, Do not look for a magic bullet here.

Start by going to a book store and purchasing books, possibly a compiler.

good luck,

Right you are! I I have created a BOM sucker using their Autolisp programming language. I started with the help manuals in the package itself. I know they are not that user friendly but if you stare at and read enough, your zen will increase to the point of accomplishment.

The VBA stuff looks straightforward enough to me, but I don't do MS when I can avoid it.

Good Luck!

I am a retired Principle Mechanical Designer and used Autodesk's Autocad for much of my design work. One of the problems with any CAD program is teaching otherwise very competent Engineers and Designers to use the tool. One of the problems with teaching the tool is the needless use of acronyms, also very common with not only Microsoft but all of the common operating systems. Why is it that programmers are so hung up on acronyms. Way back in the old days, storage space on computers (hard drives) was a premium but no long. Please guys spell it out so we know for sure what you mean. After all, we in engineering must spell it out on every document. But then, perhaps we paid attention in class and learned our reading, writing, and 'rithmatic. I know I would reject any drawing or scope of work that was not clear and accurate. A craftsman must not have to guess what an engineer means. Gosh, guys spell it out! You do have spell check for those who do not know how. A little good grammar would help, too.

The acronyms make them more technical, that's why a database manager is valued more than an engineer.

If you have a specific task you want to automate or a specific question about vba for acad, post it. Myself or someone else may be able to provide some direction.

You can also make use of the autodesk forum dedicated specifically to vba at:

IMO acad probably has the cleanest model I've seen in a cad package. if you know acad well, objects, methods, properties, and functions are all pretty straight forward.

Open AutoCAD go to menu -> Help -> Contents -> ActiveX Automation and VBA.

Should be a good start.
