Asst. to Owner of Commerical Fishing Vessel

On our 113 foot commerical fishing vessel, we use electric toilets but looking for a different system. Do you know of a processing system that would work? We fish and process Cod in Alaska.

If your environmental protection laws permit it, a chemical toilet may be suitable.

The most effective dry system that I have seen in my travels was used by a friend who had joined the 'alternative lifestylers' in a rural area of Australia.

He had an indoor dry toilet. My reaction was: 'you have to be kidding!' Heat and flies and ... They, -- the alternative lifestylers -- were using dry sawdust. Some in the bottom of the can, keep the contents covered with fresh saw dust.

No smell. That is absolutely NO smell. No flies. No liquid.

Perlite, (plant or hydroponic supplies) or the cheapest line of cat litter that you can find does just as well.

On the average, how long are your trips?

What is your normal operating distances from shore?

Are you covered by the MARPOL 73/78 Convention.............if not, are you covered by any US or Alaskan laws regarding disposal of sewage at sea?

What is the reason for not wanting electric toilets?

I work in marine system design ( mostly electrical) but was also made responsible for all other piping systems in our trawler designs. This included the sanitation systems. Manual pumping toilets are still available. Is the issue one of powwr or because of the need for Holding tanks when in near shore locations.

Compliance with Marpol can be problematic for vessels working off shore like you do but returning to restrtricted discharge zones when entering or leaving ports of call.

You don't say where your voyages are, but I assume a 113 ft boat is not staying close to shore.

Look at cruising sail boats. They have several choices including: dumping, maserating/chlorinating, holding tank, electric, and a few others.
