MAG STARTER

I HAVE A THREE PHASE MAGNETIC STARTER WITH A HOA AND A START PUSH BUTTON I HAVE THE STARTER HUMMING WHEN I PUSH THE START BUTTON I HELP THE STARTER TO LATCH AND IT HOLDS BUT WHEN I TRY TO RESTART IT HUMMS I CHECKED THE 120V COIL AND IT READS FINE I CHECKED THE NO CONTACTS AND THAT CLOSES.ANY SUGGESTIONS ?

Your starter may have dirt or contamination on the piece that slides in with the contacts and is causing it to hum. Usually you can just clean this section out of whatever may be hanging up. Sometimes you may get a little piece of the housing that chips off and jams behind it.

You may also have a weak coil that just isn't strong enough to pull it in and latch it. You may need to change the coil.

One other thing to mention would be if the motor starts sluggishly and also hums, you may have worn or uneven contacts for the motor. Most rebuild kits have contacts and springs that can be easily replaced.

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE I CHANGED THE MAG FOR A NEW ONE SAME PROBLEM I TOOK READINGS OF THE COIL WICH WAS SUPPOSE TO BE 120V THE COIL GIVES ME 70V NOT ENOUGH TO PULL IT IN I LIFTED THE HOT OF THE COIL AND I HAVE 120V I REMOVED THE LOAD OF THE MAG AND STILL NO LUCK I TRACED THE WIRES THROUGH THE N/O AUX CONTACTS EVERYTHING LOOKS FINE THE MINUTE I LAND THE WIRES TO THE COIL IT DRAWS DOWN THE VOLTAGE.THE MOTOR AND EVERYTHING WORKS FINE WHEN I HELP THE STARTER LATCH, THE VOLTAGE AT THAT POINT READS120V THE MOTOR DOES NOT STRAIN.

OK, you have a three phase starter with a single phase coil. Double check that it is not 220volt. If it is 120 volt, it's going to need a neutral to complete it's circuit. Check the neutral with a lite bulb for load carrying ability. Get 120 from the coil feed, check it all the way thru the start switch, it could be bad. As you know, once the coil is in, it gets juice from another circuit.

Always remember, delta is dangerous.
