48' linear motion

04/11/2008 2:33 PM

Here is the scenario; there is a wall that is 48' long and 14' tall. There are swallows (little) birds that have the ability to take dirt and make nest right on the side on our homes wall. We clean the wall almost every day. My question is, is it possible to create a motorized slide system that has the ability to travels 48' carrying with it (the load) a 14' long aluminum rod. This slide system needs not only to travel down 48' but it also needs to return and continue this motion continuously. Travel speed 1 loop every 2 mins. weight of the rod is 7lbs

Yeah, it is possible, but unnecessary

Swallows eat all the mosquitoes and unwanted insects

A simple belt or chain on a pulley (like a close line on its side, with a motor on one end) would do the job

From these links

http://www.wpr.org/pets/pettips.htm

How to keep swallows from nesting on your porch

Bob in Fredonia, KS had a problem with swallows nesting above his front door. All he had to do to solve the problem was paint the ceiling of his porch light sky blue! He says the birds don't find the porch attractive anymore because the "sky", meaning the sky-blue ceiling, doesn't provide the same protection the old ceiling once did. Meanwhile, Phil in Ashland, WI hung wind chimes on the side of his house. As soon as he did, the swallows left and they never came back

A chain drive would work, however it would be noisy.

A quieter system would be to use pulleys and steel cables.

No

If you use a chain just connect to the outside of a link. If you are using a pulley, connect to the cable with a small clamp like a ski lift. Then the motor can run continuously in one direction

Stick up a shelf under where the swallows nest to catch the by products. Clean annually.

Why don't you try a wooden owl and put it somewhere in sight? Or some other natural predator.

Or a giant windshield wiper.

Prop a 14' long piece of lattice against the wall near the nesting and introduce a couple black snakes.

Personally I don't understand the urge to dominate over your immediate environment like this. These little birds are fantastic and a treat to watch when they have their young.

I would rather try to live with them than to get rid of them, they sure look to me to be a better neighbour than the first human I can spot from where I am sitting.

Try to envisage the plank to catch the droppings and let them be, we have a global problem with diminishing bird populations of all kinds. Maybe you are fortunate to have these little twitters.

Quite agree. I have swallows in my workshop and they are a pure joy. It can get draughty, and I can't heat it, and I have to cover things under the nests, but the pleasures outweigh the very minor irritations by such a massive factor that I can't really understand where the problems is, especially since a crud catcher is so easy to fit.

Not likely they are the type that return to their original nest site, like where they hatched or near by. You'll have a life time irritation...Save your self the headache and prepare a nesting spot in another area close by... enjoy.

That is a good solution. Provide nice cosy and out of the way nesting facility near by but not to your own detriment. Than you stop them nesting on the spot where they annoy you and voila, problem solved and no birds were harmed in filming this.
