fan design for speed

I am designing a hand held fan system powered by rechargable batteries - Nicad or possibly Lithium. I am looking for any tips regarding design of the shroud or enclosure to help maximize air speed. Also, are axial or 'squire cage' style arangments better for speed and power efficiency? Thanks!

Hello Rodm

"Squirrel cage" motors run exclusively on AC = Alternating Current, and to supply such a motor from a battery pack will require an Inverter and transformer, all of which will give off further heat.

Are you trying to design something entirely different?

Why I ask, is that most local discount stores sell such a hand-held personal fan for a few $$$.

Hello Sparky,

Yes, I am working on a new type of product. I have seen a cordless mattress inflator and leaf blowers using something like a 'squirrel cage' fan, but the blades are short in the axis of the motor and form only a short cylinder, more the proportions of a bottle lid than a tin can.

Sorry I misunderstood your first Post, and presumed you referred to the motor as being a "squirrel Cage" type.

Your fan is a "reel" type, but with a very short axis.

If your hand held fan is for personal cooling, then an axial fan will work best. Axial fans provide the best airflow when there is no back pressure.

Futher to your quest for efficiency, in general a DC electric motor will be more efficient than AC, and a brushless DC motor is the most efficient.

You could always try a punkah fan, and obtain a wallah to run it.
