Does all CMM inspection software bite ?

04/12/2008 12:27 PM

Is ALL the CMM "CNC" inspection software on the market today primitive compared to CNC machining software or is it just me?

I'm referring to the actual driving and point taking process, not the mathematical computation and reporting function although that could use some major improvements as well.

My point is that I used 3rd party CNC "CAD/CAM" software in trade school over 5 years ago that was more functional and easier to use than the very latest CMM programming software. In the past I programmed CNC mills, lathes, grinders and EDM's using industry standard G and M code that was produce by the "off the shelf" CAD/CAM software and tweaked it after post processing to the needs of each machine. More recently I've gained a couple years experience programming 3 different MAJOR brands of CMM's each with their own proprietary software and they all fall short.

I know full well that I'm comparing apples to oranges but in 2008 I just expect more especially for the outrageous prices they charge and feel that each brand of CMM hardware having it's own proprietary software has stunted the metrology industries overall growth. Just watch a video of a 5 axis milling machine program run and then a 5 axis CMM inspection program, no comparison, and the machining program having many more lines of code can be produced in less time! I can produce a program to machine a complex mold or die faster than I can produce one to inspect it!

That's my rant for today....................

I have to agree with you.

In defence of them I must add that the software developed around crippled machines, but they unfortunately did not improve the software along with improving machines.

I am a DIY fan and has always written my own driver, optimizing and some tool path generators.

We recently replaced some older controllers with Galil internal cards and the improvement is amazing. (30 min opp can now be done in 6 min).

Getting machines to do something better or faster really is fun.

OK, I have to chime in here. I'm like you, I've programmed both. Now let me share some insight that I found. Let's look at the CNC Milling machine, big, solid, made of large cast iron, 15+ horsepower spindle....

Now the CMM, small, dinky little bridge crane, delicate little ram... not only that, but the CMM has a completely different charter in the manufacturing world.

The CNC mill is to go from place to place as fast as the cutter will allow, start and stop at precise locations. done end of story.

The CMM has to find an edge, hit the edge, stop and record the location, back away from said edge, retract or reposition without hitting anything, then repeat.

The large difference is the CMM has to position without contact, then make contact and most important, record the position, then do the math and report the results.

As you can see, the software was written around completely different goals.
