To reduce the pressure in the line downstream of the turbine, and therefore to provide a greater pressure difference across the turbine. The result is more shaft work from the same fluid circuit and an increase in thermodynamic efficiency compared to not having one.

Please refer to a textbook on Thermodynamics and study 'thermodynamic cycles'.
