Boiler Stack Capacity

04/16/2008 4:55 AM

We are in the process of design stage for our plant expansion and Im having trouble with the boiler stack.

Currently we have 3 nos x 12500 kg/hr boilers operating at almost optimum capacity and we are intending to add 1 more boiler with a capacity of 15000 kg/hr.

The total steam generation would likely to have 52500 kg/hr.

I need to know if our existing stack with an ID of 1200 mm if enough to handle this capacity.

Our operating conditions as follows.

Boiler Operating pressure: 14.5 bar g

Boiler Operating temp: 200 deg C

Depends. How much fuel you are using, is there any stack gas cleaning device to cause back pressure, what is your fuel to steam efficiency? At a guess with normal fuel consumtion and a good fuel efficiency you will probably have an exaust gas exit, under the new conditions, of at least 10 m/s. You will also have to allow for friction losses increasing too.

I live in Ontario, Canada. We have a gas code that dictates flue (boiler stack) sizes and rules for installations. It is more than likely that you have a simular authourity in your part of the world that will give you the allowable capacity of your boiler stack based upon gas consumption, application, stack hight and physical conections to the stack. The gas provider is the best place to start.
