Why Is My Pump Stuck?

04/16/2008 9:53 AM

It sounds very absurd but one of my vertical Sundyne pump gets stuck whenever I take it inline. It gets free on isolating. The pumped fluid is heavier hydrocarbons at a pressure of 20bar. I opened the pump for checking the casing and the impeller. No mark of any rubbing on either of them. Gear box was also inspected and found OK. I boxed it up again and asked to take inline. The mystery is still unsolved!!

That is indeed interesting.

Have you checked the power feed to the pump? Sounds like the pump is fine the next component in the system is the power feed and control system, might be the problem... Look for corroded connections, you might even go as far as re-doing all the connections from the pump bask to the 'on switch'.

Could you check if the driver is rotating? If yes, check the coupling and fix the coupling trouble.

This type of inline vertical Sundyne pump is characterized by its higher RPM (may be 6000 RPM), and therefore, please do the following:

1. Check that the power is on.

2. Check that the pump is fully primed (filled with hydrocarbon).

3. Start pump operation with the suction valve is fully open and the discharge valve is fully closed, to allow establishing of a starting current (for a about 8 second).

4. Start to open the discharge valve step-by-step and observe the the ampere until the pump attain its designed current.

should i keep the min. flow also closed? No.

The min. flow shall be open during both the startup and operation, whatever your controlling by a control valve or manually by manual valve and orifice.

Dear Mr. Galala,

He needs to vent the impeller case before starting pump.

Yes Guest,

If you read my Post #3 : 2. Check that the pump is fully primed (filled with hydrocarbon) you will find the reply. That is means neither air nor vapor are permitted to be located inside the pump before startup.
