How can i be using ASME codes on the internet to do my design?

04/16/2008 11:50 AM

I am a mechanical engineer by profession(Pupil engineer) and i need ASME code to be doing my design but i dont know how i can be tracking down these code on the internet.

To design a pressure vessel in accordance with ASME code, Section VIII, Division 1, ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code VIII/Div.1 (ASME

To select the standard flanges: ASME B16.5 Flanges

Also, see : Thin-Walled Pressure Vessels & Topic 6.5 - Pressure Vessels

There is a lot if you need and interest.

Very interesting site for types of ASME standard flanges and their dimensions: ASME Flanges, in PDF formats, used in ASME pressure vessels and piping.

If that LPG retail outlet composed from a pipe and flange, the mechanical design of both in accordance to ASME shall be as following:

1. For pipe design , please see CR4 thread High Pressure Steam Pipe just as example.

Note. This example is solved based on ASME B31.1 Power Piping, but for LPG piping you can use the ASME B31.3 Process Piping, or ASME B31.4 Hydrocarbon pipeline.

2. For selection of flange rating, please see the site ASME B16.5 Flanges

You Probably can't find it on the internet, it is protected by copywrite. ASME sells the code books. Believe me thay are expensive. I suggest that you go to a technical library that may have the books or possibly a CD Rom with the code on it.

Re: How can i be using ASME codes on the internet to do my design?

Adefikayo:

As pointed out, the ASME Boiler and pressure Vessel Code parts are expensive, and not available (legally) without cost as they are all copyrighted documents.

Additionally, I think that the assumption was that the application was a pressure vessel, but the pressure vessel code itself, ASME Section VIII, has threee seperate Divisions, each independent of the others, and sold seperately as well.

If it is a Pwer Boiler that is the basis of the design (ASME Section I), then it would drag in by reference ASME B31.1 (one part of the piping codes).

In any case the material standards (ASME Section II - Parts A, B, C, D - all seperate volumes) would be a necessary refrence source, at least part D, which is where the stress values permitted for design are located.

Then there are the welding and brazing qualification requirements (ASME Section IX), and the Non Desrtructive Examination requirements (ASME Section V).

In all, I would say that unless this is being approached as an exercise, the project should be approached with cation, as there are a large number of potential pitfalls.

I purchase my ASME books every 3 years and I get the new addendum every year. Although I still get my books in hard copy you can get them in electronic from the ASME site. I gave nearly $7,000.00 for my last set with new binders. You can get allot of info from the many commercial sites that sell different ASME rated products but for designing purposes I think you will have to pay for it. You may only need Sec. II, Sec. VIII, Sec. IX and B31.3 for your design though and not the 15 different books that I buy for my work.

Sorry, there is a correction: Material ASME SA515 Grade 60 is Group No. 1 (not 2).
