cable size calculation

04/23/2008 2:20 AM

i have seen people calculate the cable size depending upon the amps rating. but i need the basic calutation method mathematically.

if there is any simpler method to calculate.

Please refer to the latest edition of the Wiring Regulations, maintained and published by the Institution of Electrical Engineers.

for selecting the cable size, three parameter has to check

Step1:

01. current rating - As per the current rating mentioned in the catalouge, we will select the cable size after necessary derating.

02. voltage drop- Secondly, the selected cable size has to deliver the voltage to the motor with in allowable voltage drop( 3%). for that we will calculate the voltage drop by following basic formula

voltage drop = √3.I.Z.L

I- current in amps

Z- impedance of the cable

L- length of the cable

03. short circuit - Next, we have to check for the short circuit rating
