converting an ACAD .dwg file to TIFF or EPS formats

04/27/2008 5:36 AM

I need to convert an autocad2005 drawing into a EPS or TIFF file with an image resolution of 600dpi-1200dpi (momochrome). The final image size should not be more than ~5" in width with unchanged aspect ratio. How this can be done using any freeware or using licenced versions of AUTOCAD, Paint, photoshop editor applications?

Background:I tried 'tifout' option in ACAD. It does not allow to set resoltion (dpi) or image size. When the drawing was exported to .tiff format, The resultant TIFF file has 939x519 pixels with 96dpi. When the .tiff file was opened in 'Paint' and copy-pasted to Word document, all features in the figure, sized to 5" width in WORD, are clearly visible on PC monitor (set to 1024x768 resolution).Similarly I exported the drawing to EPS format. ACAD showed the effective plotting area: 7.50 wide by 4.14 high. EPS file did not give any information about image size and resolution. When EPS file opened with 'GSView' and the figure was copy-pasted to MSWORD, the resultant figure looked OK on screen when sized to 5" width using 'fomat picture'in MS WORD. But a journal, to which I have to submit the figure insists that all monochrome figures should have a image resolution between 600 dpi-1200 dpi with width no more than about 5" for production purposes.

Ask your friends which "flavor" of AutoCAD they have. They may be able to help. Too, you might be able to change the resolution if you can do an image Save As (I am not an AutoCAD expert, I use other software) so this might not be an available option.

As for the EPS image, what you may see is a "postage-stamp" image, with the "real image" available as a PDF, if you print the final document with the correct resolution. BTW, the resulting file sizes may be on the order of megabytes, so email submission may be an issue.

Having worked in publishing, documentation, and CAD there may be many options that you are unaware of. Most of these options are buried and may take a few steps. There are many reasons why a good publisher is expensive.

I recently had some printing done to "ticket-size" media, which also had to be submitted in .eps format (sorta-kinda-like .wps format, in that it is capable of retaining vector info). Part of the info was a portion of a street-map, which I did in AutoCadLT. No matter what I did, I also couldn't get the file to translate from CAD to .eps while successfully retaining the vector info.

But; since overall resolution was the necessity, I simply "maximized" the CAD drawing by doing "View", "Zoom", "Extents"... then did a "Print Screen" capture to the clipboard; "Pasted" into Paint Shop Pro... cropped what was needed and "Saved As" an .eps file. Vector info not present, but the printer's artwork guy said that he could work with it no-problemo.

Try it and ask if the Journal artists can make it work ~(?) Best-of-Luck.

this should be easy

type render, then set it to render to a file, set the file type to tiff, and set your resolution, then do the rendering and set your file name and location.

I tried 'render' option as suggested by Craigsat. But resultant TIFF file shows just a grid of dots (instead of drawing)!

Another possibility is a screen capture utility (I use MWSnap). It will capture an area, a window, or the whole screen and convert it to jpg, bmp, etc.

One problem with it is that very thin lines sometimes are difficult to capture. If you capture a small area and try to enlarge it, you will loose some lines.

It's still a good utility to have. There are several availabe as free downloads, so why not try it?

You may use 'pdf creator' is a free program that allows you to print as a normal printer in different formats also in tiff.
