Steel Truss Water Tower: Stability Questions

05/02/2008 8:54 AM

I'm trying to 'run the numbers' on a steel truss water tower for a non-profit in Guinea. I've found the Euler formula and kind'a understand it but what I'd like to find is an example of this online. I've looked and find lots of textbooks and software for sale but I cannot fine an example worked out start to finish. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Rob

The Euler formula are valid ONLY for relatively slim trusses. The ratio l/ inertia radius (for the buckling type) should be over 120. If the truss is shorter you should use equations as Tetmayer/Jasinsky or other for the non elastic buckling.

I respect any understandable question and give usually an answer if I can.

I consider as abnormal to write a word which does not give any explanation for "WHAT" you want to know.

Hi.

It's just a question: did you find a good example? I try to solve something similary and i'm interested. What means "run the numbers" - any software?

Cheers.

Valid for you and for Mio under the link you have a very good explanation of buckling and can work with it:

http://www.efunda.com/formulae/solid_mechanics/columns/columns.cfm#ExtendedEuler

In efunda you have as well the explanations for the buckling of short columns.

If you ask "google" for "truss stability" you get a lot of informations and in wikipedia as well. The different steps are clear and you do not need any thing else than read carefully
